May 13th, 2017. Albuquerque, NM. After a long wait, the first home match is finally here! Sol FC kicks off their 2017 season with a friendly against the Las Vegas Mobsters, of the UPSL, tonight at St. Pius X High School. This year has been great for the Sol thus far, winning their only contest in the preseason, defeating CSU-Pueblo 5-0, and winning the first road friendly match of the regular season 2-0 against NPSL opponent FC Arizona. The Sol did have a preseason clash cancelled when an unexpected snow storm hit Santa Fe at the end of April. The match was scheduled to be played on April 29th against Trinidad State Junior College, but could not be played due to weather.
The match is the first match of the supporters club trophy series called the “Copa Frontera.” Three supporters groups that support Albuquerque Sol FC, FC Tucson and Las Vegas Mobsters created the Copa Frontera trophy series in 2015 when all three clubs played in the Mountain Conference of the PDL. The Sol won the trophy in it’s initial year, with their supporters group, the Sandianistas, hoisting the silverware. The “Cactus Pricks” of FC Tucson and “Mob Squad” of the Las Vegas Mobsters were looking for revenge the next year. Unfortunately, in 2016, the teams were separated by conferences and were not able to play the contest. Fortunately, in 2017, the Copa Frontera is back in play and all three clubs’ supporters groups are anxious to get their hands on the 2017 trophy.
Last time out, the Sol defeated the Las Vegas Mobsters 2-0 at UNM Soccer Stadium on July 2nd, 2016. This avenged a 2-0 loss to the Mobsters at the beginning of the 2016 season. We are looking at an exciting showdown tonight on the campus of St Pius X High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm MDT at St Pius X High School. Gates open at 6pm. Tickets are still available at AbqSolFC.com and the weather looks absolutely fantastic!
