Gleadle Scores Two as the Sol Shines in Arizona

May 11th, 2017. Mesa, AZ. Albuquerque Sol FC kicked off the season last night in Mesa, AZ with a 2-0 victory against FC Arizona, of the NPSL. The Sol entered the contest coming off a 5-0 win in Taos, NM, in the only preseason match of the year. The Sol’s squad are players who just landed in Albuquerque this past weekend. The team had a chance to complete 2 training sessions before traveling to Arizona on Tuesday afternoon. After a quick training session on Wednesday morning, the team prepared for the match with FC Arizona.
In the 12th minute of the match, Sam Gleadle, a member of the 2015 Sol Squad, slotted home the first goal of the contest. He also extended the Sol’s lead in the 2nd half in the 47th minute with a beautifully chipped ball over the keeper into the far left corner of the goal. FC Arizona would apply pressure the rest of the half and hit the post in the 85th minute but could not find their way past the Sol goalkeeper tandem of Tyler Pavlet (1st half) and Elliot Rubio. (2nd half)
Sol Head Coach Matt Gordon was pleased with the victory and had a chance to look at a lot of his new players in the friendly. “The first 15 minutes of the game were played at about 100 mph, that’s a tribute to FC Arizona” commented Gordon. “In the 2nd half we were on the back foot a lot but we added the 2nd goal and that was crucial. I was very pleased with the result.”
“I thought we showed that we have good players and we put in a solid performance for our first time playing with each other.” Commented goal scorer Sam Gleadle. “We identified things we need to work on, but we are all happy and proud of the shift we put in.’ When asked about how the season looks now, Gleadle added “We believe that we are going to be a top team this season, and with a couple more bodies coming in, the squad will continue to improve. We have an exciting season ahead and we can’t wait for the home opener.”
