The 1980 USA Men’s Hockey Team received an inspirational speech from Coach Herb Brooks that started with the words “Great Moments Are Born From Great Opportunity.” The Southwestern Showdown Rivalry kicks off this Saturday night in Albuquerque, presenting both the Sol and FC Tucson an opportunity to set the tone for this season, and this year’s versions of the rivalry.
It’s tough to predict how teams will fare in the PDL. You get a brand new roster each and every year of guys from all over the country, all over the world. Even if you recruit the most talented players out there, the beautiful thing about soccer is that they have to have great chemistry on the field to be a winning team.
The Southwestern Showdown is a special rivalry. “When two committed and experienced organizations, technical sides and passionate fan bases collide, it makes for great soccer and even better entertainment.” commented FC Tucson Managing Partner and Head Coach Jon Pearlman. “Our squad always looks forward to playing the Sol.” said Pearlman.
“FC Tucson is always a difficult game,” said Sol FC Coach Matt Gordon. “They always bring in talented players and a little change to their staff has seen a slightly different style of play to last year. This makes them a little unpredictable in many ways, they can play through lines but also mix it up too.”
When asked about the Sol’s preparation, Gordon went on to say “Solid week of training from our guys, great energy about us and we feel ready to play. Double session and a class room session on Friday will complete our preparation. One injury, two guys still to come in, otherwise we will have a full roster to choose from. Looking forward to getting our regular season underway.”
Tickets are still available for the Southwest Showdown this Saturday 5/20/17 at 7:30pm at St Pius X High School. You can purchase tickets at http://tickets.abqsolfc.com.
