On Saturday, the weather held true to New Mexican tradition. On a clear day where the sunset was magic and the sun seemed to shine brightly on Ben Rios Field. The Sol began it’s fourth season of existence against the Las Vegas Mobsters in a “friendly” to start the home schedule for what promises to be a great season full of optimism. Many old friends along with some new faces came together to watch the Sol put on a second half show with tremendous energy led by Jack Clancy’s two goals. Luke Lawrence also created many opportunities on goal. Kareem Saleem was also in the mix, scoring his first goal of the season. The team played with intent and purpose, creating a buzz in the stands. The Sol came away with a 5-1 victory over the Mobsters with a perfect chance to really build momentum next Saturday against rival FC Tucson in a division match up that starts off the season for real.

If you weren’t there on Saturday, this is what you missed. You would discover the Cornivore popcorn concession stand with a great variety of drinks and classic American food such as a tasty hotdog with all the works, or the DoubleSol green chile cheeseburger to get your chile fix. Godfather’s Pizza was also on hand to give every pizza lover a sigh of relief. Make sure to get your Sol swag this year at the merchandize stand. Your favorite jersey is available along with this year’s awesome scarf. T shirts are also available to represent your Sol pride. The Sandianistas, Albuquerque’s advocates for soccer, were on hand, providing passion and fire, and smoke bombs in celebration with every Sol goal. Another exciting aspect of Saturday’s game was the chance for the kids to be a part of the match as ball boys. Kudos to the kids for a job well done!

The Sol have started the preseason with convincing wins over FC Arizona and the Las Vegas Mobsters.  Now primed and ready, the Sol are about to meet up with FC Tucson for the coveted Golden Rattler Trophy. FC Tucson has kept the trophy in it’s possession these past three years. But the time is now for the Sol to have the chance to hoist the Golden Rattler high into the air. Head Coach Matt Gordon is excited about the competitiveness of this team, and is pleased with how the process is going. This coming Saturday, the match with FC Tucson will have rivalry and divisional standings implications. The season is finally here and so is the excitement. There’s still time to become a Soldado member with benefits around the community. This Saturday’s game will be at Ben Rios Field, St Pius High School. Starting time is 7:30 PM. I hope to see you there!
