Southwestern Showdown Moment: First Ever Goal in the Rivalry

It was a warm summer evening in 2014, June 6th to be exact, in the Sol’s first ever season. A decent contingent of FC Tucson fans made the trip from Tucson to Albuquerque for the 2 game series and the stage was set for Round 1 of the Southwestern Showdown. The teams were to clash on both June 6th and June 7th in Albuquerque, and then July 4th in Tucson.

In the 15th minute of the match, the first ever goal in the rivalry was scored. Hometown player Isaiah Madrid was the one to score it and it was a great goal. It was a wonder strike from about 35 yards out into the top right hand corner, leaving a very talented FC Tucson goalkeeper with not much of a chance. The Sol maintained the lead for most of the match but conceded a goal in the 89th minute, thus the match concluded in a 1-1 draw.

This was the first chapter of the rivalry. All in all, the Sol are 1-4-1 in the rivalry series in the regular season (0-1-0 in the postseason) and look to improve upon that record this year, facing FC Tucson 4 times, twice in ABQ and twice in Tucson.

Tickets are still available for the Southwest Showdown this Saturday 5/20/17 at 7:30pm at St Pius X High School. You can purchase tickets at http://tickets.abqsolfc.com.
